Envoy

Meaning: A messenger or representative, especially one on a diplomatic mission.

Example: “The UN special envoy to Yugoslavia”.

Synonyms: representative, delegate, deputy, agent, intermediary, mediator.

Antonyms: receiver.

Infiltrate

Meaning: Enter or gain access to (an organization, place, etc.) surreptitiously and gradually, especially in order to acquire secret information.

Example: “The organization has been infiltrated by informers”.

Synonyms: penetrate, invade, intrude on, sneak into, creep into.

Antonyms: retreat.

Foil

Meaning: Prevent (something considered wrong or undesirable) from succeeding.

Example: “A brave policewoman foiled the armed robbery”.

Synonyms: thwart, frustrate, counter, oppose, baulk, disappoint.

Antonyms: assist.

Neutralize

Meaning: Make (something) ineffective by applying an opposite force or effect.

Example: “Impatience at his frailty began to neutralize her fear”.

Barely

Meaning: Only just; almost not.

Example: “She nodded, barely able to speak”.

Meaning: Make someone aware of or familiar with.

Example: “New staff should be acquainted with fire exit routes”.

Quash

Meaning: Reject as invalid, especially by legal procedure.

Example: “His conviction was quashed on appeal”.

Synonyms: cancel, reverse, rescind, repeal, revoke, retract.

Plea

Meaning: A request made in an urgent and emotional manner.

Example: “He made a dramatic plea for disarmament”

Synonyms: appeal, entreaty, supplication, petition, prayer.

Antonyms: demand, answer, decision, reply.

Fling

Meaning: Throw or hurl forcefully.

Example: “He picked up the debris and flung it away”.

Synonyms: throw, toss, sling, hurl, cast, pitch, lob, bowl.

Antonyms: receive, acquire, attract, get .

Besiege

Meaning: Surround (a place) with armed forces in order to capture it or force its surrender.

Example: “The king marched north to besiege Berwick”.

Synonyms: lay siege to, beleaguer, blockade, surround.

Antonyms: let go, leave alone.
